One of the great things about my trip to New York was being able to watch a bunch of programs on Hulu.  Hulu is a great service available in the US that lets you watch current programs over the Internet. There are a bunch of great shows on offer like House, Lost, Dollhouse and other shows not yet shown in Australia like Modern Family.

Unfortunately when I got back to Australia, licensing rules and IP addresses stopped me. When you try to watch anything, you get the Hulu black screen of nada.

How to set up Hulu to watch outside the US

Firstly, do not waste your time with a free service.  I spent numerous hours researching the internet and trying a bunch of different free services.  Hotspot Shield, FoxyProxy and IPHider do not work.  You just cannot get a connection to the US that is fast enough and Hulu is shutting down most of these free services.

Your best bet is to purchase a US Based VPN.  There are numerous VPN providers out there.  Some even give you the ability to switch between the US and the UK, therefore allowing you to watch the BBC iplayer too!

As an added plus, a VPN will also help you get around this ridiculousness Internet filter that is being proposed by Communications Minister Senator Conroy.  According to Adam Turner, writing for PC Authority:

“…the easiest way to access restricted content is to mask your location using a US-based Virtual Private Network. A VPN creates an encrypted tunnel from your computer to the VPN provider, who then connects you to the internet.”

(Thanks to Anthill for this quote)

Steps to watch Hulu in Australia

1. Check your internet connection speed.  I have the Bigpond cable Ultimate and sometimes it still results in stuttery play.  Go to www.speedtest.net and check your download speed to LA.  If you get anything below 0.5Mbps then it’s probably not going to work for you.

2.   Purchase a US VPN from a reputable company. I like VPNAuthority.com because for $63/year, you get the option of using a US or UK based IP address at one time. Another upside, they do not restrict the number of times you switch between them. In the past, I used StrongVPN.com, but the switching restrictions to go between hulu and bbciplayer are prohibitive.

3. Set up your new network (Your VPN provider will have the details) and connect

4. Start watching shows!

I live in oz , I have tried UK company Lamnia Hosting! Cost me £35.00 for USA VPN. Has never work. I have complained to the by email and they have not replied! Then they charged me for another 3 months subscription .I have since canceled the subscription. I was in the USA in March and watched Hulu and it was great. Stupid Americans think they own the world. They sell you they are happy to sell you the hardware to get the service . But only in the USA.

hey guys, just wondering if you know of a way to ‘turn off’ the american based vpn once you have set it up… or if there is a way to only ‘turn it on’ when i wish to watch hulu, then turn it off when i wish to search the internet through my usual ip address. is this possible?

tried VPN authority – works well.. thank you. :)

VPN Authority made accessing hulu a breeze. I just wanted to provide a more thorough review of VPN Authority.

Customer Service – AA++. Martin (sp?) was extremely helpful in answering all my technical questions. Moreover, he was very patient with explaining the setup process with me. THANK YOU!

Speed – A+++ Speed is great and they have a number of servers around the world. I think at last count, it was 8 servers with 2 in the US (so if one is slow, you can always switch to the other server).

Price – AA+++. Like a tonne of people here, I tried some ‘free’ servers, but they were SO slow that it wasn’t worth my time. I did my research and these guys were BY far the cheapest, so from that perspective, it was great. My only wish was that they had an option to buy longer than a year because I know i’m going to be here for the next year and a half.

Overall – AA+++. Overall, I would recommend these guys … it was easy to setup and customer service just topped it off. I’ve recommended these guys to my friends and they all agree as well. Hope this helps. =)

Awesome! I definitely am not an IT professional…so I didn’t even know such a service existed. My needs are simple. I am military deployed overseas and I need to access some online language learning “Videos on Demand.” Unfortunately, streaming was restricted because I had a non-US IP address. A friend recommended Anonymizer.com but that didn’t work for me. The IP that Anonymizer generated was still not U.S. With the good help of Google search and a productive online chat with VPN Authority service rep, it became clear that giving the service a shot was the right way to go. I haven’t been disappointed!

Perfect – thanks for the heads-up re: VPN Authority. It’s awesome! They also have a UK server for those interested in BBC iPlayer.

Phenomenal suggestion on VPN Authority. For those that are connecting to them (which I recommend as well), use their US 2 server. It’s a hella lot faster! Happy new years to all!

Thank you very much to those who posted on VPN Authority. It really is a relief to know we can get US shows in Australia without the huge delays!!

I love the service and it’s nice to get reliable TV! I have signed up for 1-month right now, but plan to subscribe for the year when it’s all said and done! :)

    VPN Authority ROCKS!

I’ve also stayed with VPN Authority… easy to connect and a superb team. Love it!

I’ve tried quite a few vpn providers and to be honest, they haven’t been very good. I recently switched to https://www.vpnworld.co.uk and it really has been excellent. I purchased what they call a vpn combination account which is 2 or more different countries. I got US and UK so I can watch all the American tv, including hulu, fox, nbc etc and British tv including all the BBC and ITV channels and iplayer, 4od etc.
    Really recommend them.

  • Charlie Montgomery said:

Lesley – the price at VPN World is more than 5 times the price of VPN Authority… You can’t even switch servers if you want to access UK or US content. Doesn’t make any sense.

Anyways, VPN Authority is really tremendous – pricing, speed and customer service has been VERY good. just finished my first month with them. Two fat thumbs up!

    Thanks Kristi and Killian.

  • David said:

strongvpn.com was a good vpn a few years ago but the last few years it has been unreliable and slow.

  • Matthew said:

You’re right David. I was also with strongVPN, but they have really deteriorated. They have really poor quality servers that are REALLY SLOW. Probably due to number of users.

VPN Authority seems good, noticed they just added another US server too.

  • Peter G said:

Not sure what the other poster is saying, but I was just about to say that I’ve had great success with VPN Authority. They don’t even ask for any personal information in their sign-up. It’s been great. thanks Kristi

Hi, does anyone know if by doing this i will be able to watch hulu on my ipad??. Thanks

  • Responder... said:

No – you won’t be able to because the iPad doesn’t have Adobe Flash .. which is how to watch hulu. BUT – you can access ABC, NBC for american programming. ;)

  • Kristi Barrow (author) said:

Yes you can use Hulu on your Ipad, however you will need to sign up to Hulu plus.

  • J Mizzou said:

When reading this I thought it was a scam for VPN Authority. I googled “australia hulu” and this was the first result. After searching for free service and failing, I decided I would try the 1-month version and was prepared to call my bank and tell them I was being scammed.

However, just as Kristi Barrow says, if you use VPN Authority and follow the instructions, it works. It is 100% worth the cost. Thank you very much Ms. Barrow.

Bob should realise that stupid Australians think that Americans are stupid. Smart Australians realise how smart Americans can really be.
Figure it out. Americans have Hulu at their fingertips. It seems Australians don’t. Besides all nationalities have their plusses and minuses and to have one group calling another group “stupid” just
    isn’t helpful, or polite.

Anyone worked out how to sign up to hulu plus from Australia?

  • Ray said:

    Hi,
Am definately keen to try this out. Can you please advise if you needed to pay for the hulu service with a US credit card or will it work with an Australian one?
    Thanks,
    Ray

  • Ray said:

…………Oops, maybe you don’t need to pay for the hulu service. Anyway, I am guessing you need to be creative when signing up for hulu and entering your address??

  • Kristi said:

    Hi Ray,

you actually don’t need to sign into Hulu at all to watch the shows. You only need to sign-in if you want to save a watchlist etc.

You do need to sign in for Hulu plus. I will be testing this soon to see if you are able to sign up from Australia.

    Cheers
    Kristi
