Must have for travelling – Part 2 Stuff

13 October 2008 1,620 views No Comment

Continuing on from Useful Gadgets for travelling, here is my list of useful stuff for travelling. All this stuff should fit easily into a purse or bag so there is no excuse for not being prepared!

Useful Stuff

Ear Plugs

I never travel without ear plugs! They are light, cheap and small. I do recommend the flesh coloured plugs, rather than the fluoro orange or green ones.

Travel snaps for:

  • Cutting down on annoying aircraft, train or bus noise
  • If you cut them in half, not only are they more discreet, you can safely sleep leaning your head on the side, without dislodging your inner-ear
  • Useful for concerts, festivals, nightclubs and crying children

Alternatives:

  • Toilet paper or tissues.
My mum once did this at a Midnight Oil concert at Selinas in Coogee. Although not as effective as ear plugs, it does help. However it does look ridiculous!

Chewing Gum

My ears always have a terrible time on take-off and landing so chewing gum is invaluable. Combine the gum with a good yawn and your ears will be fine.

Travel snaps for:

  • Saving my ears in planes, elevators and funiculars
  • Freshening your breath after that especially garlic Italian dinner
  • Can be used to replace blue-tac if you are desperate!

Alternatives:

  • Lollies.
Minties or other strong chewy lollies are best

Travel Locks

Anyone travelling through the US needs to have TSA locks if they want to have any kind of security on their checked luggage. They are a bit pricey, around $20, (You can currently find them for $17 at GoGear), but definitely worth the money.

Travel snaps for:

  • Ability to keep your luggage locked when travelling through the US
  • Combination lock, so you don’t need to worry about losing keys
  • Avaliable with an unlock indicator, so you know if your luggage has been opened by security.

Alternatives:

  • Leave your luggage unlocked!
