How to update Twitter with your Facebook Status

19 November 2008 4,039 views 41 Comments

Twitter – yes I am finally using it!

I never really understood the point of twitter. Until I started using Facebook came addicted to updating my status. And then…. I final understood the meaning of Twitter! One of the great geek epiphanies.

But since I am not going to update both,  I set up a feed to automatically update Twitter from my Facebook status using Twitterfeed. It was very straightforward to set it up:

Edit: Updated with screen shots to help you find your way around

How to update Twitter with your Facebook Status

1. Set up an account on Twitterfeed. It uses the OpenID system so you can use an existing login from sites like Flickr, Blogger,Technorati and more, or just set up a new one.

2. Click “go to my twitter feeds (or create a new one)”.

3. Click “Create a new twitter feed”.

4. Grab your Facebook Status RSS feed location. The easiest way to do this on the new facebook is to login and go to this link – http://www.new.facebook.com/minifeed.php?filter=11 and then right click on My Status from the Subscribe to these Stories: menu and click copy link location.facebook twitter feed rss How to update Twitter with your Facebook Status

Edit – this no longer seems to work for anyone anymore. To find your facebook status RSS URL, read Facebook RSS feeds – what is available?

5. Go back to Twitterfeed and enter your twitter username and password. Paste you RSS URL you just copied from facebook. Uncheck “Include item link (if unchecked, sends tweet without the link)”. There are a few other options you can play with.

6. Finally click “Create” and you are done! Twitterfeed will check for updates every hour (you can change to 30mins if you want). Be patient, I did find it took over an hour for the first tweet to happen. Your Twitterfeed page should look like this.

Thanks – this is so helpful for non-techies like me! I appreciate your step-by-step instructions. Now if only I could figure out how to get my RSS feed code so I can include my blog posts, as well. Any suggestions?

THANK YOU SO MUCH! Didn’t want my twitter statuses going to Facebook (that’s so easy to do) but wanted to get Facebook to twitter — never would have found the feed without your link! Thanks!

    Why?
Facebook is my personal friend group — Twitter is my more anonymous group where I can share things I would not be comfortable posting on Facebook.

Thanks. Great article. Very helpful. Twitter and Facebook are really different (friends vs followers) and I really don’t want all my twittering to annoy my friends!

    Hi,

Your article was SO helpful and easy to follow. I did run into some problems. I used the Facebook/Twitter app so that I can update my Facebook through Twitter, then used Twitter feed and added my Facebook RSS feed. I can update my Facebook through Twitter, no problem. But when Twitter pulls up my Facebook status, it updates my Twitter, which then updates my Facebook and goes back and forth! I need some help here…Am I missing something?? Did this happen to anyone else??

I get the same results as at least two other people who’ve posted here. There is no longer a link to subscribe to mini-feed RSS on the new Facebook. If there is, it doesn’t appear when I use Safari. When I try to use the general link to the mini-feed, I get the following error:

We couldn’t parse this feed. Please check that you entered the correct feed URL.

Question though – this gets complicated when you also have the Twitter application running on Facebook, as when Twitterfeed reads your Facebook status and then updates your Twitter status, the Twitter application duplicates that status on Facebook.

Is there anyway to have universal syncing without any doubles whether you decide to post on Facebook or Twitter? Or are we limited to having to pick just one place to update statuses?

Hi Jen and Confused, will take some screenshots and amend the post – hopefully this will help you out. GIve me a few days!

Tygerman – (not sure I understand your point that 2 other people have commented on the same problem???) I checked the link http://www.new.facebook.com/minifeed.php?filter=11 today and it is still working for me following the recent changes.

I am not sure I exactly understand your problem but I will try to help. Can you provide some more detail as to what happens when you visit http://www.new.facebook.com/minifeed.php?filter=11

The subscribe just isnt there anymore. Its gone. Its part of the new update. So where is it? hmmm
    heheh
Is there a way to take a generic status feed url and just replace the user numbers?

  • kristi said:

    Hi Nev,

just checked again and it is there for me with the new facebook (see the screenshot above). Investigating the generic URL/user numbers like you suggested. (There seems to be a key that you need to be using.) I’ll post the generic RSS feed on my blog, just need to check one thing!

This works really well. And, I’m wondering if there’s a way to strip out your name at the front of each status in the mini-feed. They took out the “is”. Why can’t they take out the name? Does anyone know how to do that as part of the above process?

  • Nikolaos Alexiou said:

Facebook and Twitter appear to be linked. However, when twitter gets updated with the Facebook status, it adds the first name to the feed, which creates a loop of repeating first name in the status. For example, I post on twitter “wondering if this works”…facebook status gets updated and says “Nik wondering if this works”..when twitterfeed looks up the feed, it picks up “Nik wondering if this works” as the status…then this get back to Facebook which displays “Nik Nik wondering if this work”….and this becomes an infinite loop! Is there a fix for this? I had to disable the facebook feed from twitterfeed…

  • J said:

I did all of this and its updating more information than just my status. It’s taking all my facebook friend ’s comments and such. Is there anyway to just have it sync my facebook status updates?

  • Tim said:

I got a valid status RSS link to be accpetd in Twitterfeed.

Waiting now to see if my Status update on facebook will be sent to Twitter, takes 30min.

Here’s what I did, I created a new user account on facebook and added myself as the only friend. On my real account I had to accept the friend request.

Back to the new account, I went to my Friend’s Links page, http://www.facebook.com/posted.php and right clicked on the “My Friend’s Links” at the lower right and copied that link.

Paste that link in your RSS feed and replace the part of the URL that has:

    share_friends_posts.php

    with:

    friends_status.php

Since there is only one friend (me), that will be the only updated status.

We’ll see if it works in 30 mins – 1 hr.

  • Fred said:

w00t! It worked! Took about three hours for the first tweet tho. The interval is set to 30 mins so hopefully the next one will be on time.

You can find the facebook’s RSS feed link doing this:
    -First Log in to FB
-Go to your Wall or your FB page’s wall
-click on the address bar’s rss icon to the right…( where the browser show you the address of the page you are in… to the right you’ll see the icon) click it and will open a page showing your wall post
-copy the URL from the address bar
    -add it to twitter feed
    and done
